Viruses and trojans have been making their way slowly to computers through malware infected script advertisements on big name web sites, and the situation appears to be getting worse. Yesterday a customer got infected just by being on Yahoo! Finance.
How can you stop this from happening to you? In Windows Vista and 7, be sure that Internet Explorer's (IE's) Protected Mode is enabled (check the status bar in IE for "Protected Mode: On"). User Account Control (UAC) must be ON for Protected Mode to be enabled.
Protected Mode is not available in Windows XP; therefore the best defense is to remove advertisements from IE. This will also remove the risk of unknowingly contracting a virus from a malicious advertisement.
Check out this link for a great solution to this problem called Simple Ad Block, which works in all versions of Windows from XP up, and IE 7, 8, and 9. It is free to use but the free version will only block 200 ad requests per day. At $30 it is a great deal and blocks unlimited ads, including popups, popunders, and practically any other ad on the web pages you visit. We highly recommend this product for safer browsing. For Firefox, check out AdBlock Plus FREE!
Windows Restore Virus! This virus is pretty much the same as the others where it tries to hijack your ability to use your computer and it asks you to pay for it.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION: if you get this virus, try rebooting your computer into Safe Mode (press F8 as your computer restarts) and do a system restore. This appears to be working (for now) for some users.
